Oh to be young again, and scoring goals for the biggest football club in the world. At 18 years old, Swiss born Sydney Schertenleib, standing at 1.78 metres tall, or 5 feet 10 inches, has an arguably pretty decent view from her perspective. With a very recent come up emerging in 2024, Schertenleib has made 9 senior team appearances for FC Barcelona Femení with one goal and two assists, including participation in two UEFA Women’s Champions League matches this season.
The 2007 born forward was acquired from Grasshopper Club Zürich in the Swiss domestic league, along with making appearances for Switzerland’s U-19 level and Switzerland’s senior national team. Similar to Barça’s own Salma Paralluelo, Schertenleib embraces a quick pace and speedy sprints which enable her to take advantage of running past opposing defences. Schertenleib has adapted well to the rhythm and flow of FC Barcelona’s style of play, and as an adolescent career-starter, she composes herself well alongside more experienced players such as Caroline Graham Hansen, Ewa Pajor and Fridolina Rolfö.
Considering FC Barcelona acquired Schertenleib on a free transfer mid-2024, her full debut for the first team occurred on November 2nd 2024. Since then, progress has been made individually and cohesively. Schertenleib’s first trophy for the club came in the form of the Supercopa Femenina in Liga F. Hopefully one of many titles, although FC Barcelona Femení most recently suffered their first ever loss to Real Madrid, so improvements as a whole unit will need to be implied by head coach Pere Romeu. In the meantime, the Culers will prepare to face VfL Wolfsburg in leg 2 of the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final, and Sydney Schertenleib will be there ready to shine.
