According to reports, Frenkie de Jong is open to leaving Barcelona this summer.
Frenkie de Jong holds a pivotal role within FC Barcelona’s squad under the guidance of Xavi Hernández. Yet, his prominence on the team has sparked speculation linking him with top clubs across Europe.
Despite the allure of a change, De Jong has consistently expressed his commitment to Barcelona and his determination to thrive within the club. However, recent reports suggest a potential shift in his stance. Journalist Lluís Canut, a collaborator with MD, indicated during his appearance on the ‘Onze’ program on ‘Esport3’ that De Jong may now entertain the idea of leaving the Catalan club next summer.
Canut explained, “De Jong hasn’t given his approval, but he’s no longer ruling out a departure from Barcelona as firmly as he did two seasons ago, when he received interest, particularly from Manchester United, to reunite with his former Ajax coach, Ten Hag.”
Canut elaborated on the reasons behind De Jong’s contemplation of a departure, citing the player’s purported disappointment with Barcelona’s inability to meet the lofty expectations set upon his arrival. “Currently, De Jong is somewhat disillusioned with the situation at Barcelona because the club hasn’t fulfilled the expectations that were generated when he signed, particularly in terms of securing major titles. Consequently, De Jong would be open to departing Barcelona at the conclusion of the current season,” stated Canut.
It’s worth noting that two seasons ago, Manchester United identified Frenkie de Jong as a primary target, with President Joan Laporta revealing that the English club had submitted a €100 million offer, which Barcelona rejected. Despite this, De Jong opted to overlook the proposal from the “Red Devils.” Furthermore, the sports management, led by Deco, holds De Jong in high regard, with Deco himself affirming that he wouldn’t trade the Dutchman and Araujo for a signing like Mbappé.
