PSV Eindhoven’s football director expresses hope that Sergiño Dest will extend his loan spell at the club.
Sergiño Dest, a player for FC Barcelona currently on loan at PSV Eindhoven until June 30, could continue with the Dutch side next season, according to PSV’s football director, Earnie Stewart, who also hopes to retain the services of another American, Malik Tillman, on loan from Bayern Munich. Dest has been playing a significant role for the Eindhoven team as they approach their 25th Eredivisie title. In the loan agreement between PSV and Barcelona, in addition to Barcelona retaining a percentage of any future sale, the Dutch club could exercise the option to buy Dest for €10 million, as reported by ESPN.
Asked whether PSV would like to have Dest and Tillman for the 2024-25 season, Stewart commented, “Yes,” because “both players have done fantastic things for PSV. I can say that we hope both players stay.”
PSV’s football director added, “Dest is an attacking full-back who helps us play the way we want, getting up and down the wing.” He also added, “I think it’s important for him to be at a club for a longer period.”
Dest joined FC Barcelona in the 2020-21 season from Ajax for €21 million plus an additional €5 million in variables. He committed for five seasons, until June 30, 2025, and signed a release clause of €400 million.
The full-back, born in Almere, Netherlands, but holding American nationality, emerged in Ajax’s Youth Academy, moving up to the first team in the 2019-20 season. He joined Barcelona for the 2020-21 season and spent two years there, playing 72 games and scoring three goals. Barcelona loaned him out in the 2022-23 season to Milan, where he had limited opportunities (only playing 14 games), and since last summer, he has been defending the PSV jersey, also on loan, playing 32 games and scoring two goals.
