The topic of Lionel Messi’s renewal has been a major talking point for months. It seems now more than ever, that Barcelona’s President, Joan Laporta is edging closer to a deal with the Argentine.
During his whole campaign, Joan Laporta promised the culés that Lionel Messi would renew with the club and continue his amazing career at the head of the Blaugranas. After the infamous burofax debacle, it seemed that Messi had no interest in being part of Barcelona in the future. However, with the victory of Laporta a new hope has overtaken the Camp Nou.
Today, the President of the club went to the premier of TV3 documentary “Messi, el desè art” (Messi, the tenth art). After the screening, Laporta answered a few questions regarding the number 10.
On how he feels regarding the renewal
“I’m calm. His boots will remain on the pitch of the Camp Nou. I neither contemplate nor consider a ‘no’ from Messi. It is not easy, but if a series of circumstances go our way he will stay. The idea is to close the deal as soon as possible.”
Regarding the economical aspect of the negotiation
“On the economic side, Messi has made it very easy. Then there is also the issue of financial fair play. We haven’t set a date to close it.”
On his ideal date to officially announce Messi is staying
“We do not set dates, but given the choice, I would like it to be June 24, which is my saint and his birthday, or on June 29, which is my birthday.”
Regarding the Summer transfer window and possible arrivals
“We will find the right formula for financial fair play. There will be more player coming in. Not with a normal transfer. We will do many swaps with other clubs where there are many players that may interest us.”
