Íñigo Martínez wants to stay at Barcelona.
Íñigo Martínez is not considering leaving Barça in the upcoming summer transfer window. He neither considers it nor wants it. Despite reports suggesting his departure due to the economic issues the club may face in registering players from June onwards, the defender is surprised to see his name mentioned, according to Gabriel Sans of Mundo Deportivo Nobody from the club has discussed anything with him so far.
Therefore, he is solely focused on Barça, pushing for options in La Liga and aiming for qualification for the Champions League round. The Basque defender is happy at the club and in Barcelona. He has one more year left on his contract and another optional one based on appearances, and his intention is to fulfill them. He doesn’t think about anything else. When he negotiated his arrival, with Mateu Alemany in the sporting direction and Jordi Cruyff in football management, the club explained the reasons and the role he would play. Nothing has changed.
The player even facilitated his situation at the start of the season, accepting that he wouldn’t play and would instead invest time in recovering from his foot injury. Barça wants to regularize the situations of Gavi, Balde, and Vitor Roque. He has one year left on his contract, but the appearance clause may favor him for the existence of a third.
Pau Cubarsí’s ‘promotion’ doesn’t bother him. On the contrary, Íñigo Martínez intends to help him in every possible way. He did the same with Iamine Yamal on the field. Indeed, the former Athletic and Real Sociedad player was hired to cover the deficit of experienced players who can lead the team. The surplus of central defenders for the next season doesn’t affect him. With Pau Cubarsí, Barça has up to five central defenders. Additionally, there are Koundé, Araujo, Iñigo Martínez, and Christensen.
