Barça Femení will face an old foe, Wolfsburg, on Thursday, in the first leg of the Women’s Champions League semifinals. This will be the first meeting between Wolfsburg and Barcelona in the UEFA Women’s Champions League since the 2022-23 final, when Barça Femení came from 2-0 down at half-time to win 3-2 in Eindhoven and claim the trophy.

Barça lost its first three encounters against the German side in the UWCL but has since managed to turn the tables and win two of its last two games against Wolfsburg (losing the third). The team is widely considered the favorite for this quarterfinal round.

The German side has progressed from three of their last four QF rounds in the competition, only Lyon (13 times) reached the semifinals more often than Die Wölfinnen (8 times). However, Barcelona has progressed in the last 16 two-legged knockout rounds in UWCL since losing to Lyon in the 2017-18 QF. Precisely, it’s the French side the only one to put longer such streaks together in the competition’s history (17 and 20).

We can expect some fireworks here since Wolfsburg (152) and Barça (147) are the two teams that shot the most in the group stage, and Barça (26) is the top scorer of the competition this year. However, it’s Wolfsburg’s Alexandra Popp the player to lead the rankings, with 26 attempts (having scored 4 goals).

Aitana Bonmatí is the player who has been directly involved in a higher number of goals in the UEFA Women’s Champions League matches over the last three seasons, with 28 (13 goals, 15 assists), and she is expected to lead Barça once again.

Let the fun begin.
