As they prepare for Firpo’s departure, Barça have enquired about Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso as a possible signing, having made an attempt to sign him in the winter transfer window.
FC Barcelona have not yet sold or loaned any player yet, although there are some who are clear candidates to leave the club in one way or another because they are not counted on. This is the case of Junior Firpo, a left-back who is the usual substitute for Jordi Alba and whom Barça considers one of the footballers who will be leaving in the coming weeks. Since Barça are already clear that the former Betis full-back will end up leaving, they have already started to probe the market as they look for probable options to replace him. According to Mundo Deportivo, one of the names that offers more guarantees and that has been liked for a long time in the technical secretariat is 30 year-old Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso who has a contract with the London club until 2023 but is not a regular starter in the blue team.
In fact, Barça’s interest in Marcos Alonso is not new and has experienced different episodes in recent months. Barça already reached an agreement with him to sign him last winter market when they tried to sell Junior. Barça reached an agreement with Marcos, who was not counted on at all by then coach Frank Lampard, to arrive on loan at Barça until the end of the season. However, in the end Junior stayed and it was not necessary to activate that operation.
However, the possibility of Junior leaving is recurrent in Barça’s market windows and that is why in the current one he has re-linked with several clubs. And in that scenario, the name of Marcos Alonso has reappeared in relation to FC Barcelona. In fact, from his surroundings, Barça have been intimated that the Chelsea player is still ready to dress as a Barça player. And from FC Barcelona, this predisposition of the Chelsea side has been noted and their agents have spoken about how the arrival could be articulated if they finally bet on him as a replacement for Junior.
In fact, Barça had laid the foundations of a transfer agreement with Marcos Alonso in the last winter market, but it was a negotiation that began during Bartomeu’s term and ended during the electoral campaign. Therefore, now it would be necessary to update that agreement and find the formula to convince Chelsea, although that was already on track last summer.
Lampard is no longer at the English club and Marcos has a little more prominence with Thomas Tuchel on the bench, although he is still a substitute for Ben Chilwell. Therefore, the former Real Madrid player would not put too many impediments to leave the London club.
Barça is not the only club that has been interested in Marcos Alonso. Inter Milan, who have also made a move for Jordi Alba, have him in his agenda of possible reinforcements. The Madrid-born full-back ends his contract in 2023 and given his versatility, he is a footballer who could fit in at Barça. A long-distance winger with a good footing, he can also act as a center-back given his good ball output and his height (1.88 meters), which makes him a threat in the air.
