Joao Cancelo is determined to remain at Barcelona.
Joao Cancelo is a guy who knows exactly what he wants and right now, one thing he’s sure about is that he doesn’t want to leave FC Barcelona. According to Fernando Polo of Mundo Deportivo he feels very comfortable there and is making a big impact with powerful performances in attack. The latest was in the second leg of the round of 16 against Napoli, where he scored Barcelona’s second goal, sending the Camp Nou crowd into a frenzy.
The Portuguese full-back is under contract with Manchester City until 2027, but he’s currently on loan at Barcelona until June 30. However, he has no intention of returning to the English club. On the contrary, he has instructed his agent, Jorge Mendes, to do whatever it takes to keep him at Barcelona, whether that means extending the loan or negotiating a permanent transfer.
In Cancelo’s case, Barcelona would be willing to pay a reduced transfer fee. Considering his age and his desire to only play for Barcelona, the club believes that City should facilitate his departure at a reasonable price, no more than 20 million. Alternatively, they could extend his loan. Mendes will present this to City during a trip to Manchester soon to discuss the situation with the player, whom Pep Guardiola does not count on.
A couple of weeks ago, the Portuguese agent met with Joan Laporta and Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director, in Barcelona. Cancelo is highly regarded in the dressing room for his fantastic integration and leadership, especially in moments of high tension and pressure.
