Barcelona keeping tabs on the situation of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
The economic situation facing Barça doesn’t allow for major deals, and one market being closely watched is that of experienced players becoming free agents next summer. Such is the case for 34-year-old center forward, Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting. The Cameroonian’s contract with Bayern Munich ends on June 30th, and specifically, Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur places him in FC Barcelona’s orbit, although the Blaugrana wouldn’t be alone in this pursuit. The report suggests that clubs from the Premier League, Serie A, and the Saudi Pro League are also closely monitoring his situation.
When Robert Lewandowski joined FC Barcelona last season, Bayern Munich found his replacement in-house.
Choupo-Moting, who was in the shadow of the Polish ‘killer’ and mostly a substitute, seized his opportunity. From October 2022 until late January, he had a great scoring streak, although he gradually lost prominence afterward, and a knee injury interrupted his continuity. Choupo-Moting scored a total of 17 goals in 30 matches, including one against Barça at the Spotify Camp Nou (0-3). It was his best season. The trust given to him by Julian Nagelsmann hasn’t continued under Thomas Tuchel, as Bayern signed one of Europe’s top strikers last summer, England’s Harry Kane.
The ex-Tottenham player is indisputable and has once again pushed Choupo-Moting into the background. The Cameroonian international has only scored 3 goals in 27 matches, most of them as a substitute. Kane’s contract runs until 2027 and cost over a hundred million euros, which inevitably leads Choupo-Moting to seek a change of scenery after realizing this season that he won’t be able to reclaim his position. Interestingly, if he were to join Barça, he would do so at the age of 35 (he turns this month in March), a few months older than when Lewandowski joined, who will turn 36 in August.
