FC Barcelona center back Ronald Araújo is set to sign a five-year contract renewal to stay at the Catalan club. The deal could be finalized next week.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Uruguayan center back held talks with the club this week to negotiate his renewal. Talks progressed well, as he is eager to remain at Barça, and the club is willing to improve the conditions of his contract.
The club will meet with Araújo’s representatives next week to discuss the remaining details of the Uruguayan’s proposed contract.
Araújo received interest from other European clubs, such as Manchester United, but he is happy with his situation at Barça. The 22-year-old defender is settled in the city with his family, feels appreciated by the club and its supporters, and wants to be a key piece in the new generation under manager Xavi Hernandez, per the same report.
Araújo joined Barcelona B from from Uruguayan club Club Atlético Boston River on Aug. 29, 2018, and he signed for the first team on Oct. 5, 2020. He has become a stalwart in the back line for the Blaugrana, and he has recorded four goals and one assist in 62 games.
If both parties agree to a five-year renewal, Araújo will remain in Barcelona until 2027. His current contract expires on June 30, 2023.
