The wining streak continues: Barça Femení 4, SD Eibar 0

In their first game back from international break, Barcelona Femení continued in their winning ways, dominating Basque side SD Eibar.

The Blaugrana were warmly welcomed back home at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, where they faced off against Yerai Martin’s side. Eibar hoped to gain some points from the fixture after a string of losses and a draw before the international break.

Barcelona head coach Pere Romeu made five changes to his lineup from the fixture against Levante before the break. Ona Batlle, Ingrid Engen and Jana Fernández were brought into the defence. Patri Guijarro joined Alexia Putellas and Vicky López in midfield. Gemma Font replaced Cata Coll in goal.

Before kickoff the players presented their Club of the Year award to the fans in the stadium. Aitana Bonmatí also presented her second Ballon d’Or trophy. The two-time winner was also joined by runner-ups Caroline Graham Hansen, and Salma Paralluelo. This marked a monumental achievement by the club, as it was the first time in the history of the women’s award that the top three stars in the rankings were all from the same club. A minute of silence was also held in memory of the victims of the ‘DANA’ tragedy in Valencia.

Barcelona largely dominated possession of the ball in the opening minutes and a strike from Clàudia Pina in the third minute was sent straight over the bar. Luckily the team did not have to wait long for their effort to monopolize as they were awarded a penalty in the sixth minute after a foul by Annelie Leitner on Ona Batlle. Captain Alexia Putellas calmly converted the spot kick, putting Barça 1-0 up early on in the game. This marked her 198th goal for the club, equalling the record of former Barça star Luis Suarez as the third highest goalscorer in the club’s history.

While Eibar had a few chances, they were not enough to exploit Barcelona’s defence. Esperanza Pirazzo’s attack was quickly cut out by Alexia Putellas in the 15th minute and Barça quickly shifted the momentum in their favour.

An impressive back heel pass by Alexia Putellas to Clàudia Pina in the 19th minute hit the post. However, the team did not have to wait long to be rewarded for their efforts. Vicky López slotted the ball into the back of the net after Noelia Garcia saved Pina’s initial long-range effort. A comfortable 2-0 lead for the Blaugrana. Patri Guijarro also added her name to the scoresheet, converting Vicky’s pass with a header in the 33rd minute. The team ended the first half with a comfortable 3-0 lead.

At halftime Pere Romeu made two changes to his side, bringing on Keira Walsh and Mapi León to replace Patri Guijarro and Ingrid Engen. Barcelona constantly put pressure on Eibar’s defence, who looked rattled by the Catalan giants. Aitana Bonmatí was brought on to replace Caroline Graham Hansen before initiating the attack that led to Ona Batlle’s goal in the 59th minute, increasing Barça’s lead to 4-0.

Yerai Martin made three substitutions in the hope that her team would respond to Barcelona’s attack, but it was clear that Barça were the dominant force. Barça continued to test Eibar’s defence and Aitana Bonmatí’s attempt was denied by Garcia in the 61st minute. Jana Fernández was then subbed off for Marta Torrejón and captain Alexia Putellas made way for youngster Sydney Schertenleib in her league debut for Barça.

Barcelona ultimately cruised to a 4-0 victory, picking up another three points at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, solidifying themselves as the league leaders, four points clear of rivals Atlético Madrid. Ona Batlle was named MVP of the game as the Blaugrana claimed their eighth consecutive win in the league.
