Hansi Flick met the press after the 3-0 defeat to Monaco, where Barcelona’s ship sank to goals by Lamine Camara, Breel Embolo and Christian Mawissa. It was the club’s biggest loss in the trophy since the new one-game format was introduced in 1997.
The game took place after newly appointed club captain Marc-André ter Stegen as well as Hansi Flick did their speeches following the presentation of new signing Dani Olmo.
The German coach believed his team could have done better.
“We could have scored a goal. When you are in a team like Barça, you have to score these goals,” he told the club’s official website.
The coach went on to praise Monaco but urge his team to do better ahead of their league opener against Valencia this coming Saturday.
“I think, in the first half, Monaco get better and better. I know the [Barcelona] team can do better, and it needs to do better,” he continued.
“On Saturday, we play Valencia in the league. We’ve made some mistakes that we can’t repeat,” Hansi Flick urged.
Fans came to the Estadi Lluís Companys, where Barcelona will play until the renovation of the Spotify Camp Nou is over, and the atmosphere didn’t disappoint.
“The fans supported us very well. We must do better on the pitch and there are a lot of things we need to improve on. We have to be better on Saturday,” Flick concluded.
Barcelona’s league opener will take place at the Mestalla with kick-off planned at 9:30pm local time.
